Brief Announcement:
BD plans a new publication : International experience, part 2

Background
In spring 99, BD announced a publication concerning international experience on integrated urban renewal. We visited 15 cases in The Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and USA. The purpose of this publication was to support the implementation of future integrated urban regeneration project. You can read the full rapport on this web-site.
The work inspired us to visit other countries and go deeper into some key aspect. This is why we have started making a part two.

The second part of this International experience publication is co-financed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in Denmark. The progress of this project benefits from the inputs of a following group composed of representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Danish Town Planning Institute, the Danish urban regeneration experiment secretariat for Kongens Enghave, the State secretariat for Danish urban regeneration experiment in Denmark, SBS Byfornyelse (appointed by GI) and Byfornyelse Danmark.

Purpose
The purpose of part two is to continue the ongoing debate on participation, partnerships, exit strategies and cross-sectoral planning. It can be used as a source of inspiration by local authorities, business people, residents, housing associations, environmental groups and others who are going to work with integrated urban regeneration.

Method
The plan is to visit and describe projects in Germany, France, Sweden, Great Britain and USA.
We will interview project leaders, residents and businesses. The results will be publicized in a small booklet.

The studied projects

Since April 2000, we have visited, met and discussed several on-going project cases with various local counterparts in the following areas:
- Sweden: Stockholm, Kista and Tensta
- Germany: Berlin, Prinzlauerberg Helmholzplatz, Schillerpromenade, Mahrzahn Nord West
- France: Lyon, Vénissieux
- USA, The Bay Area: Oakland: San Francisco and San Jose
- Spain: Bilbao
We are planning to visit some cases in Great Britain in the coming months.

A short description of the studied projects

The cases analysis

The cases’ analysis will be conducted at two levels:
- from the point of view of the general framework, urban policy and instruments used by the decision-makers and the municipalities to carry out their projects in these areas
- from the point of view of the selected themes for which the projects present successful results

In collaboration with our following group, we have decided to focus on the following themes that are illustrated as successful examples by the studied projects:

Main themes:
Examples of partnerships
Integration. The inclusive city
The use of local indicators

Other themes:
Citizen empowerment and democratic process
Collaboration with universities and high schools
Building urban renewal
Places and streets
Culture and sport facilities
Information strategy and image communication
Time schedule and exit strategy
Economy and financing
Local organisational framework

Time schedule
The publication is currently under preparation and will be ready by April 2001. It can be seen as a supplement to the IUPM guide of the IUPM Interreg IIC project.
