Case Studies Vilnius Old Town: Užupis – Paupys Area Case study
1.7. Streets, bridges and parks
Many streets in the both areas are in a bad shape and need reconstruction. 0,5 kilometre of the two main streets in lower Užupis were reconstructed in 2000-2002 when renovating the engineering infrastructure and pavements. There are plans to continue street renovation for the rest of Užupis which are being postponed due insufficiency of public and municipal funding. One pedestrian path connecting upper Užupis with the Bernardine’s Garden was renovated and lighted in 2001. But others which are intensively used still remains in a need of renovate.
In Paupys, the situation is somewhat different, due to different land use. Inside the industrial area, there will be need of reconstruction in future, depending on the use of the area. In the residential area in the south-east there are some gravel roads.
The city lightning, mainly streetlights, is still not of sufficient condition and the issue is not yet been solved. App. 70% of the streetlights in the Old Town is working.
There are number of bridges in the area over the river Vilnia. The two western bridges have just been renovated, but there is one bridge for pedestrians and one for vehicles that still need renovation. Many of river bank and street trees are in need of proper maintenance and cutting. The ponds park was cleaned up and three ponds were reconstructed in 1999, but the new greenery isn’t planted still. The overall maintenance standard of the parks, green areas and pedestrian paths is still low.
