1.4. Employment figures

Number of jobs felt dramatically in 1991-1993 when relatively big industrial plants (factories of electric installation, textile, leather treatment and conservation of food stuff) lost their capacities due to collapse of the former Soviet Union industrial/ economic system. Number of jobs in Paupys area industrial plants was nearly 5 thousand in 1990, while there were approximately 1.7 thousand jobs left in late 2002, which made up app. 0,5% of total number of jobs in Vilnius city. It should be stressed that the very minority of workers of the formerly functioned industrial plants were residents of Užupis/Paupys.

Unemployment rate in the area could be considered as higher than average in Vilnius. Average unemployment in Vilnius city in mid-2003 was 5.4%, in Užupis/Paupys unemployment reaches 10%.
