Case Studies The Karolinenviertel Case in Hamburg - St. Pauli
Historic background
The physical and spatial structure of today’s Karolinenviertel has its origin in the beginning of the 19th century (1890-1910). This process had been accelerated by changes in its direct surroundings, for example the razing of the medieval fortification of Hamburg. The former suburb of St. Pauli and with it the Karolinenviertel became an integrated part of the City of Hamburg. Therefore around 1860 this area had been developed with a high density of multi-storey apartment buildings. During this process the typical block-structure and road-layout had been developed which to large extend has still been preserved until today. Inside the inner block areas commercial enterprises have been established, mainly from the craft-sector. A huge part of the inhabitants of the Karolinenviertel had worked at the adjacent slaughterhouses (today meat market) during this time.
In the focus of the regeneration procedures which started in 1988 were the modernisation of the building substance, the new building of apartments as well as partial coring of mainly commercially used inner block areas in order to create healthy living conditions, respectively room for open and green spaces.
