Case Studies   The Danish Neighbourhood Regeneration Programme. Kvarterløft in Copenhagen

The experiences

The ambitions have been too high regarding the economy of the project. Therefore the project has not been able to fulfil all the ambitions. One of the visions for the project was from the beginning to expand the project to all of the Kongens Enghave neighbourhood. This has not yet been feasible.

At the same time it was one of the ambitions to create a local garbage station where it would be possible to deposit a larger scale of waste and hazardous waste like paint residue, batteries, oil and so forth. This station has not yet been established in Kongens Enghave but there are still negotiations going on as to the location of this garbage station.

Another ambition was to establish a compost station situated locally in the neighbourhood so that the tenants were able to see the outcome of the participation in process and by this participation also motivate the tenants to focus on their waste disposal. It has not been possible to actually create this composting station. The production costs were far too small due to the small amount of waste in the neighbourhood.

The project has utilised a very great part of the waste by dividing the disposal into the nine fractions. It has not been possible to fulfil the ambitions of the project regarding establishing an environmental waste disposal station in the local neighbourhood. Therefore at the same time the reduction of the costs has not been distinct enough to employ local manpower in order to enhance the green profile of Kongens Enghave further.

One of the definitely positive experiences gained through The Waste Disposal Project is the participation of the residents in the housing societies where the project has been established. A report elaborated by an extern counsellor showed that the residents had a great knowledge about the project and at the same time the residents were satisfied with the project.
