Case Studies   The Danish Neighbourhood Regeneration Programme. Kvarterløft in Copenhagen

The purpose of the project

The purpose of the project is to form a pilot project in the city of Copenhagen to see whether it is possible to develop and handle a waste disposal with several types of waste disposal fractions. Another purpose is to get the residents in the project neighbourhood to participate in the thus more demanding type of waste disposal.

From the beginning it was a vision that Kongens Enghave was to become a neighbourhood with a ‘green look' – being responsible for and taking care of the environment. At the same time the project aimed at enhancing the consciousness of the residents regarding the importance of waste disposal.

Another goal was the education of the local participants (such as janitors and garbage men) so that they are able to inform residents about The Waste Disposal Project. The goal was from the beginning also to create a cheaper way to dispose the garbage so it would be feasible to employ local unemployed and in that way strengthen the green profile of the Kongens Enghave neighbourhood. The intention with the project was also to create new green jobs by the employment of more caretakers at the same time as the project evolved and expanded to a larger part of Kongens Enghave.

The Waste Disposal Project is set to be a temporary project running for three years from 20002003 but it seems certain that at least a part of the project will be continued.
