Case Studies The Berlin Case Study: The Socially Integrative City.Wrangelkiez, Boxhagener Platz, Ostkreuz
Core
Problem: Vacant Properties
A huge problem for
Berlin as a whole, but in particular for the area in question here are
the numbers of vacancies in housing and commercial spaces, in public
infrastructure like schools and kindergartens and on former industrial
sites. They are a result of economic and demographic change. In the
eastern part of the area, about 16% of the housing stock is empty, with
a concentration in (mainly un-restored) old buildings.
About 1000 commercial units – which is about 40% - are empty in the
eastern part (basis for this figure is a counting of ground floor
units).
Vacant shop at the Falckensteinstraße, empty Kindergarten in Döringstraße and Max Taut Hall at Nöldnerplatz
Deindustrialisation and Cultural Industries today The Sub-Areas and their specific Features
See Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung 2002, p. 5.
The research area of the quoted analysis is
widely congruent with the ENTRUST-area. It is slightly larger but
does not include the Wrangelkiez. There, it is mainly shops that are
empty.
