Case Studies The Berlin Case Study: The Socially Integrative City.Wrangelkiez, Boxhagener Platz, Ostkreuz
Introduction
This
case study is about the context and dynamics of partnerships in, and
for, deprived urban areas in Berlin. There are many and well known
similarities of such deprived neighbourhoods. But at the end of the day
it is probably their particular blend of problems and potentials which
decides on which policy and what kind of partnership works best for
them. Consequently, the following report looks at one area and a
particular policy approach in Berlin, but within it are various
neighbourhoods with specific histories and characteristics, and
different variations of the policy at work.
The
case study looks at three specific forms of the „Socially Inclusive
Urban Development“ approach in Berlin by discussing examples of its
implementation in three policy areas located in the south eastern part
of the inner city. It will introduce the implementation of the EU
Community Initiative URBAN II and examples of the Bund-Länder-Programm
(joint federal-state-funded programme) “Socially Integrative City” and
the regional programme “neighbourhood funds” funded by the state
(“Land”) of Berlin. The three examples illustrate the various forms of
collaboration laid down in the integrated approach to neighbourhood
development with the aim of stabilising and revitalising the areas.
