The Following Years

After its foundation in 1773, the Moravian settlement in Christiansfeld grew quickly, reaching its highest population figure of 761 in 1845. Many businesses, both large and small, were started, (which created a need for an enlarged workorce), leading to the situation where people without any connection with the Moravian movement settled in the town. The brethren were hard working with skilled craftsmen, traders and industrial people, and the community attached great importance to the nurturing of an enterprising business culture, which would enable the town to become self-sufficient. In the space of a few years, an important craft and manufacturing business was created, which until 1864 retained its importance not only in the local area and market towns but throughout the whole country.

Some of the first businesses were as follows:
Hotel, dye works, candle makers, stove manufactures, cigar and tobacco factory, piano manufacturers, hat makers, rope makers, church tower clockmakers, silversmith, printers, bookbinders and a honey-cake bakery.
Of these first ventures, the hotel, stove manufacturers and honey-cake bakery are still owned by the Moravian church.
